Design characteristics of the S2M (Mouldable)

  1. Soft thermoplastic material allows for a tight fit on the upper and lower teeth.

  2. Tongue tag encourages the correct resting position and maintains an open airway.

  3. Air Spring Core™ both opens the airway and is comfortable for the jaw joints by allowing the jaw to move up and down.

  4. Tongue elevators holds the tongue in the correct position.

  5. Dual moulded construction with a rigid inner frame and a soft outer layer for a custom fit.

  6. 4 small breathing holes designed to encourage nasal breathing.

How the S2M (Mouldable) works

Myosa® for TMJBDS® S2 Mouldable (S2M) is designed for patients who are not chronic mouth breathers or who have already undergone Stage 1 treatment with the S1 or S1M appliance/s. The S2M works by advancing the sleeper's lower jaw and opening the bite, which has the effect of opening the airway. Due to its smaller breathing holes, the S2M appliance also optimises breathing regulation by encouraging nasal breathing. This is achieved by maintaining lip seal over the breathing holes, which retrains the patient to breathe through the nose.

Patient Selection
The TMJBDS® appliances are used based on a combination of the patient's ability to retain the appliances overnight, severity of their breathing dysfunction and their performance of Breath Hold Time activity (BHT). The S2M as well as the non-mouldable S2 - is used in the second stage of treatment if BHT is less than 30 or more. The mouldable S2M allows for the best retention while the non-mouldable S2 appliance provides optimum comfort. Auxiliary appliances that aid treatment are based on the level of the patient's joint degeneration and serve as adjuncts to the use of the TMJBDS® appliances. The full protocol is outlined in MRC's courses and attendance is highly recommended. Additionally, you can download the Myosa® appliance protocol.

Indications for use
Prior to using the Myosa® device, the treating dentist may refer the patient to a medical practitioner for assessment of sleep disorders that have medical implications. The Myosa® intra-oral appliance provides treatment for patients with symptoms of TMJBDS® and is to be used during the day until comfort is achieved. Once accustomed, it should be used for 1 hour per day and overnight while sleeping.

Instructions for use

Do not chew on Myosa® appliance. Initially use the S2 during the day to correct habits. The S2M appliance can be used at night to increase retention.

Cleaning the S2M appliance
The S2M appliance should be cleaned under warm running water every time the patient removes it from their mouth. Use Myoclean™ tablets to correctly clean twice a week. Myoclean™ is the recommended cleaning agent for MRC's appliances.

Important Points

Intra-oral appliances may change the position of teeth and alter the jaw relationship. Unlike Rigid Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs), the Myosa® appliances are flexible and minimise the potential to cause pain in the jaw joints or permanently change the bite.

Consultation with a Medical Practitioner is essential to correctly evaluate your condition.
