Myofunctional Orthodontics - Patient Education

WITHOUT the ability to clearly communicate the key points of myofunctional treatment to patients and their parents, even the most knowledgeable myofunctional orthodontics practitioner is likely to face hurdles. Therefore, once a practitioner has acquired a sound understanding of myofunctional treatment methods and the appliances used for treatment, the ability to deliver effective patient education becomes crucial.

When a parent understands there is a problem with their child’s growth and development, and they are made aware of the options available for immediate treatment, most are likely to be interested in what myofunctional orthodontic treatment has to offer.

In order to most effectively communicate with patients a doctor must first understand the process of myofunctional treatment and how MRC's appliances work. Additionally, staff must also be familiar enough with the treatment to be able to communicate its key points to patients and their parents. To achieve this, MRC has produced a range of comprehensive educational tools to ensure doctors and their staff are able to explain the causes of growth and development problems to patients as well as parents.

For patient education to be effective, it is vital practitioners and their staff communicate to patients and parents at a level of understanding they are comfortable with. The treatment methods and goals, the importance of compliance and the fact treatment does not solely aim to achieve straight teeth, must be explained in a way the patient and parent easily understands. Patients need to be made aware that myofunctional treatment is not a passive exercise and positive results will only be achieved if an effort is made on their part to address the poor myofunctional habits causing their malocclusion. If myofunctional treatment is to be successful, patient compliance is essential and is a precursor to success. Using easily understood methods to explain to the patient the exact actions they need to take as well as the reasons for those actions can significantly improve compliance and the overall treatment outcome.

MRC's educational tools include:

  1. Patient Consultation Presentation - This helps patients and parents to better understand malocclusion and its myofunctional causes as well as enables them to make an informed decision regarding treatment.
  2. Myobrace Activities - These activities are a range of fun myofunctional activities to assist patients to understand and correct their poor myofunctional habits. The activities program also includes a dedicated website called myobracekids.com where patients can log in and do their activities in a fun and interactive way.
  3. Nutrition and Tooth Decay - Educational material concerning nutrition and tooth decay and why a balanced diet is important.

Case Study

The below case is currently undergoing treatment at MRC Clinics® Upper Coomera, Australia (International Training Facility). Treatment to date has included a lingual frenectomy, Myobrace® K1 and K2 appliances, together with Myobrace Activities (Myofunctional exercises).

The 6-month change in alignment is significant, however, of particular note is the flattening of the occlusal plane, once the mentalis activity and tongue posture/function are improved.

The patient is a 13 year old male and is continuing treatment with the T3 appliance for final dental alignment.

Comments from Doctors

I would comment that there is an absolute clear correlation that any doctors fully involved in using the 'Patient Education Presentation' and following up with patients to better understand function are getting better results and are treating more patients. Practising different activities at the follow up supports the improvement of tongue action and position, lips together, correct breathing and correct swallowing. These Doctors are also realizing that it is EVERY case of Malocclusion that needs help to correct function. This makes any orthodontic treatment easier and also improves the patients overall body health.

TRAINING TESTIMONIAL

Firstly I would like to thank MRC head quarters and Dr Farrell for providing us with this training opportunity. I learned a lot about MRC’s development, philosophy and treatment.

Before this training, I had completed more than 100 MRC cases in Shanghai, with some very successful results. However, after listening to this lecture I was left feeling the previous treatment I had done was very shallow and I did not have an in depth understanding of myofunctional orthodontics.

I know now that when I used the appliances on my patients without having them complete the myofunctional activities there was a high chance of relapse, even though the cases looked perfect. As a result of the training, I now understand that if I want to achieve a stable case, as well as the appliances myofunctional exercises are an integral part of myofunctional orthodontic treatment.

During the training I learned exercises for breathing, tongue position, swallowing, and buccal labial muscles. Prior to the course, I did not know how to exercise those muscles but after the thorough training at MRC, I can now start to implement some of these techniques into my practice.

When I am back in China, I plan to re-design my MRC treatment plans, refine all the procedures and steps, and add in the myofunctional exercises. I also intend to create a more comfortable and child friendly environment. I believe it is important to continuously push forward the case for myofunctional orthodontics and MRC treatment in Shanghai, China.
