MRC 3 Day International Myofunctional TMJ Sleep Dentistry Symposium 2018

9:00 AM Thu, June 07, 2018 - 5:00 PM Sat, June 09, 2018

MRC 3 Day International Myofunctional TMJ Sleep Dentistry Symposium 2018

The Dental profession is increasingly being drawn into a role of diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. With the growing number of "Dental Sleep Medicine" courses on offer, there is a need to evaluate which of these gives the widest and most clinically orientated educational program. Furthermore, TMJ disorder remains a subject of great confusion among dentists, with the newly qualified practitioners having less knowledge of this subject than even their basic orthodontic skills.

The inaugural TMJ Sleep Dentistry Symposium by MRC will be the first to put the complete picture together. From treating a clicking joint, to evaluating and treating sleep disorders in Adults and children, this symposium will cover diagnostic and treatment procedures for TMJ disorder and sleep disorders as well as show you how to seamlessly integrate it all with Myofunctional Orthodontic procedures.

Why? Because Sleep disorders, TMJ disorders and malocclusion are integrated and, in most patients, require seamless diagnosis and treatment procedures to prevent inadequate and incomplete outcomes.

This symposium will define a new syndrome known as TMJBDS - Teeth Muscles Jaw Breathing Disordered Sleep Syndrome.

Learning outcomes:
• Understanding why TMJ disorder and Sleep disorders most commonly occur together.
• Why the "gold standard" for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnoea produces negative results despite being a billion-dollar business.
• Understanding TMJ disorder and how to provide immediate pain relief for many patients.
• Paediatric Sleep Dentistry - Myosa for Kids - published research shows its effectiveness.
• New diagnostic procedures for TMJBDS - Breathing, Joint, Muscle and CBCT evaluation.
• Newly developed Myosa® treatment protocols to be released in 2018.
• Patient education for TMJBDS.
• Treating the causes not just the symptoms - a novel approach not addressed by conventional Medical and Dental treatment protocols.

LECTURERS:

Dr. Chris Farrell BDS Sydney - Dr. Chris Farrell graduated from Sydney University in 1971 having gained a comprehensive knowledge of traditional orthodontics using the BEGG technique. Through clinical experience Dr Farrell took an interest in TMJ/TMD disorder and following further research he discovered the etiology of malocclusion and TMJ disorder was myofunctional which contradicted the established views of his profession. Dr Farrell founded Myofunctional Research Co. (MRC) in 1989 to develop myofunctional appliances that would prove effective in early orthodontic treatment. His Trainer and Myobrace® appliance systems are now used by orthodontists and dentists in more
than 100 countries.

Dr. Rohan Wijey B Oral H (Dent Sci), Grad. Dip. Dent O.M. -   Dr. Rohan Wijey is the Clinical Director and Senior Lecturer of Myofunctional Research Co (MRC) and CEO of the Myobrace® Pre-Orthodontic Centers. His myofunctional orthodontics journey began with MRC in 2007 under Dr. Chris Farrell's tutelage, and he has since lectured across 5 continents and has had numerous articles published in orthodontic and paediatric journals around the world. During his time at MRC, he has seen the worldwide acceptance of myofunctional orthodontics grow rapidly.  Dr. Wijey has also trained as a myofunctional therapist with the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) in Colorado, USA and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Despite his heavy lecturing schedule, he remains very much involved in clinical practice, dividing his time between Myobrace® and myOSA® centres owned and operated by MRC in Australia.

Vanee Ganesaratnam O.M. (Orofacial Myologist) - Ms Vanee Ganesaratnam is a foundation member of the Myobrace Pre-Orthodontic Center®, and has worked alongside Dr Chris Farrell (MRC CEO and founder) since 2005 to develop its philosophy and novel approach to early myofunctional orthodontic treatment. Ms Ganesaratnam's myofunctional education, and consequent orthodontic re-education, began in Colorado, USA, where her eyes were opened to the benefits and potential of myofunctional therapy. Ms Ganesaratnam gained her qualifications as an orofacial myologist in 2009, which was approved by the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Ms Ganesaratnam learned how simple exercises for the orofacial muscles produced significant improvements in not only a child’s malocclusion but also facial development and overall health. She has now dedicated her efforts to training other professionals around the world in this field, based on her experiences from the Myobrace Pre-Orthodontic Center®.

Jess Maidman has been in the dental industry for five years and has been working for Myofunctional Research Co. since 2012. Her passion for improving the health of all children combined with her lively enthusiastic personality and years of experience in paediatric dentistry make her a wonderful addition to the MRC team. After working in Myobrace® Pre-Orthodontic Centres for the past five years, Jessica is now the Senior Educator for Myobrace®, offering support, education and training to Myobrace® members and assisting practitioners to implement The Myobrace® System. Jessica is also apart of the MRC lecturing team and is passionate about sharing the Myobrace® philosophy around the world.

Dr. David McIntosh (ENT Surgeon) - Dr David McIntosh is an adjunct Associate Professor of ENT in Queensland. He specialises in paediatric ENT, nose and sinus disease, and snoring and sleep apnoea and is an internationally recognised specialist in the field of the interplay between ENT and dentistry. He is the founder of one of the largest ENT services in Australia and runs the largest education service in the world for dentists and doctors on ENT. With a demand for his services nationwide, he has settled in Queensland's Sunshine Coast region as the place he calls home, as it allows access to his services for people travelling from all over the country (and occasionally from overseas) whilst affording a balanced lifestyle that the beautiful beaches and surrounds have to offer. He is the only ENT surgeon working North of Brisbane that holds a PhD, paediatric subspecialty qualifications, and has been a recipient of a NHMRC scholarship. In fact there are few in ENT surgeons in Australia that have just one of these, let alone all three. From a surgical point of view, he is one of the most experienced ENT surgeons in Australia. He is a highly regarded specialist amongst his peers, having treated many doctors own family members, such is the faith and trust endeared in his knowledge and skills.

Dr Derek Mahony BDS (Syd), MscOrth (Lon), DOrthRCS (Edin), MDOrthRCPS (Glas), MOrthRCS (Eng) -Dr Derek Mahony is a Specialist Orthodontist who has spoken to thousands of practitioners worldwide about the benefits of interceptive orthodontic treatment. Early in his career, Dr Mahony learned from leading clinicians the dramatic effect functional appliance therapy can afford patients in orthodontic treatment. After completing his dental degree at the University of Sydney, Dr Mahony attained postgraduate orthodontic qualifications at the Institute of Dental Surgery (London) and the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) as well as gaining Membership in Orthodontics diplomas at the Royal College of Surgeons (England and Glasgow). He has served as a keynote speaker at the International Orthodontic Summit meetings, the International Association of Orthodontics meetings and the American Association of Functional Orthodontics meetings.

Dr Steven Lin BbiomedSc, BDent - Dr Steven Lin is a board accredited dentist trained at the University of Sydney; with a background in biomedical science, nutrition and fitness serving as a platform to helping people to understand the relationship between their mouth, how to eat healthy and their lives. As a clinical dentist, Dr Lin became increasingly troubled at the levels of tooth decay in developing children's mouths across all parts of society and the lifelong consequences that would follow as a result. Today, Dr Lin focuses on helping his patients prevent dental disease and avoid treatment. He looks for the root cause of disease, crediting the mouth-body connection as the best way to monitor our health and strongly believes the oral-systemic link means our mouths affect our body and our bodies affect our mouths. Dr Lin’s commitment to delivering revolutionary health messages that drive real change has included lectures with TEDx Talks and a #1 Amazon International Best Selling book outlining the nutritional basis of dental disease.
