The Myosa System
Myofunctional Research Co. has treated airway dysfunction for over 30 years and with an understanding of the entire mechanism of the problem, MRC has developed a range of appliances and treatment protocols to encompass a multifaceted approach to dealing with the causes by focusing on rehabilitation of the patient. The protocols involve working with medical and allied health professionals when needed to reach the best patient outcomes.
How the Appliances Work
Both the Myosa® for Children and Myosa® for Adult (TMJBDS®) appliances have similar features which aid in their effectiveness. The appliances are designed to advance the mandible to its physiological position, place the tongue in its correct position, encourage the patient to adopt the correct swallowing technique and gently open the bite, all of which have the effect of improving airway function, correcting myofunctional habits and alleviating TMJ symptoms.
Treatment For Children
Myosa for Children entails a series of prefabricated appliances that have the primary aim of establishing a functional airway in children between the ages of 2 – 12 years of age. Establishment of a functional airway is a priority, it also begins the patient’s journey of rehabilitating their dysfunctional breathing. Once a functional airway has been achieved using the Myosa system, the patient can then move onto the Myofunctional Orthodontic program using the Myobrace appliances to finalize the establishment of nasal breathing.

Treatment For Adults
Myosa for Adults, otherwise known as TMJBDS, is a treatment system that packages the treatment of airway dysfunction and TMJ disorders into one, easy to deliver treatment protocol. In adults the problem often involves both the Airway and the TMJ simultaneously. TMJBDS treatment is a system that addresses the previous issues by addressing factors relating to the Teeth, Muscles, Jaws, Breathing and Disordered Sleep, all of which must be considered when treating Airway and TMJ dysfunction in adults.
