How to get started

Research

Your first step is to review the Myofunctional Orthodontics section of this website. Once you have a clear understanding of soft tissue dysfunction and the principals behind Myofunctional orthodontics, you can move onto other sections of this site. Attending an MRC course will provide you with a greater understanding of how to implement these treatment methods in your practice.

Contact an MRC representative

Contact your nearest MRC representative to get further information about the appliances and treatment methods. They can also give you more information about MRC courses along with doctor, staff and patient education tools available for use in your practice.

Patient Selection

Identify the potential applications for these appliances in your practice. After watching each of the Myofunctional Orthodontics videos you will soon start to recognise the potential applications of MRC’s appliances. Most growing children have a developing malocclusion. Select a few patients for treatment and have them attend a consultation to learn about how this treatment can potentially help them. MRC has developed educational tools such as the 'Myobrace Consultation CDROM' and myobrace.com to assist in educating parents and patients.

Treatment Planning

Review specific materials that are related to the appliance you’ve chosen to use for your initial cases. The 'Appliance Selector' can be used as a guide to help choose the most suitable appliances. Take initial records to develop your treatment plan. MRC can offer guidance on an individual case if necessary (fees may apply). Contact your MRCrepresentative for more information.

Commence Treatment

Start treatment on the patients you’ve selected. Ensure that you maintain accurate records and regularly review each patient.

Note: Remember to tell the parents that the treatment goal is NOT just to eliminate the malocclusion (although this is possible in many cases), but to decrease its severity, improve facial growth, decrease the need for extractions, and to improve the stability of any future orthodontic treatment. If used as directed you will obtain routine success. Many orthodontic problems can be eliminated with an early start using MRC’s treatment methods.

Once you've started treating patients using myofunctional orthodontic techniques and MRC's appliances, you might be interested to learn about how to implement myofunctional orthodontics into your practice for improved efficiency, profitability and patient motivation.

Clinical Integration: Doctor and Staff Training
The first step to take when implementing myofunctional orthodontics in your practice is to ensure all designated staff have undergone the relevant training, which can be provided by MRC. Designated staff must have an understanding of soft tissue dysfunction, how the appliances work and be able to clearly communicate this information to parents and patients at their level.

Once staff are trained the majority of treatment can then be delegated to trained auxiliaries, allowing for more efficient use of the doctor’s time. MRC offers comprehensive staff training materials to assist in this process.

This allows for simple yet effective staff education that can be used to educate all your staff on a system which is based around myofunctional orthodontic treatment. Regular courses are also available - Contact your nearest MRC representative or visit the ‘Training Programs’ section of this website for more info.

Clinical Integration: Optimising patient flow - improved practice layout

One crucial aspect to consider when introducing myofunctional orthodontics into your practice is how to efficiently utilise your available space.

In order to effectively educate patients and parents, a dedicated space away from the dental areas is required. This area is referred to as the ‘Activities Centre’ and can be used to educate patients in a fun and friendly environment, away from the dental chair.

The ‘Activities Centre’ should be equipped with monitors for displaying educational media and decorative elements to assist in the motivation process. Placing mirrors in various positions around the practice also helps with the re-training process. Proper utilisation of this space can allow for multiple patients to receive simultaneous treatment; leading to increased practice efficiency.

You should also have a space allocated for patient consultations. This 'Consultation Room' is for discussing and evaluating treatment options with patients and parents.

These design characteristics allow for sizeable improvements in patient flow and treatment, all of which can be maintained by trained auxiliary staff. When these key elements are fully implemented, practice efficiency is significantly improved.

The following video tour shows you how this works in a larger scale.
